Head gasket help
Re: Head gasket help
you could bend the auxillary shaft. Are you sure all of the gears are tight?
Re: Head gasket help
Do you mean pulleys/timing belt? Because i think that stuff was good...So Cal Mark wrote:you could bend the auxillary shaft. Are you sure all of the gears are tight?

Re: Head gasket help
So, this is where I'm at now with my head gasket replacement.
The other half is still inside.
Who knows a handy method for extraction? I tried coaxing it out with a screwjy but i didnt budge.
Im not sure if the shaft damaged anything else but i hear they can punch a hole in the block. I dont think this is the case but i dont know where to look either.

Re: Head gasket help
Embarrassed to say this happened to my son and I right after he got his car and the head gasket blew. Dad forgot to recheck the timing mark on the aux shaft and broke it spinning the engine. Tried fishing it out of the aux shaft hole with one of those magnets on a stick, but only succeeded in pulling it out just far enough to drop it in the oil pan. Sooooo another hour later we fished it out of the oil pan after jacking the motor and dropping the pan just enough to get it out of the pan with the magnet on a stick. Got a replacement for Danny at Fun Imported.

Re: Head gasket help
Actually, i have an inline fuel pump installed so the only thing the aux shaft drives should be oil pump.fiatfactory wrote:Your car stopped as the aux shaft drives the fuel pump, and you would have run out of fuel...
Try taking the fuel pump off, and then you might have more luck removing the broken piece.

So the piece slid out easily after you got a hold of it with the magnet then?seabeelt wrote:Embarrassed to say this happened to my son and I right after he got his car and the head gasket blew. Re: Head gasket help
For an FI Spider or carb'd Spider with an electric fuel pump, a lot of people just cut the fuel pump lobe off and plug the end with a threaded plug. What happened is that the lobe hit the #4 connecting rod. Aux shaft timing does not matter with that modification. You are lucky... with enough force that interference will crack the side of the block.

Re: Head gasket help
Yes, the magnet was strong enough to pull it part way. It looks like you have your oil pan off already, so you could just push it toward the rear and it should fall out.

Re: Head gasket help
Doesn't cutting the Aux Shaft lobe off effect part and thereby engine balance?

Re: Head gasket help
Probably not. That lobe is immediately behind the rear journal being held snugly in the bearing. I didn't notice any kind of counterweight when I was cutting off the lobe on Monday. Drilled tapped and plugged oil hole with short bolt (with locktite). If anything, it would seem the shaft should run better without an off-center lobe hanging off the end of it. Besides, in an engine using this for the mechanical fuel pump there is the pump (arm or plunger[never saw one] ) pressure against it. No?

Re: Head gasket help
Sounds like it is possible taking the lobe off would actually improve balance.
