Windshield with Frame

Post by sergio1977 »

good afternoon Fiat community, I have a fitting question, does a 1980 Fiat spider windshield with the frame will fit on a 1977 fiat Spider, there are 2 bolts on each side of the windshield frame
1. are they easy to undo?
2. if I undo my windshield does the 1980 will fit the same?
3.what should I expect for troubles?

thank you for answering

The windshield is tricky, takes 2 people to do it properly. Mine was a trial and error process as I couldn't find any detailed guidance. The dash needs to be removed so that you can work the gasket over the lower channel/support. I also took the time to replace the rubber seals on the windshield frame that abut the forward edge of the vent window frame. That task is pretty easy using pop rivets. I also used black nail polish to dab the heads of the rivets to match the black trim piece.

This quote came from here (page 9), with pictures. http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic ... &start=120
The allen head screws may be there tightly, soak them with lubricant and use a quality allen bit fixed to a ratchet. Clearance may be tight in the door jam. I cracked the glass during removal, I did this solo so be sure to have a helper when you lift it off the car. Good time to treat any rust found on that base channel. Don't let the glass drop away from the frame when you lift it off :!:

It should fit, and the top should fit the frame, but if you want to be sure measure the distance between the top latch anchors on the W/S frame.
IT is easier with the dash out, but you could do it with the dash in place if you fit the gasket to the body first, then set the windshield in it and work the gasket around the W/S. Once that's done slide the frame down onto this.

The bolts that hold it to the car are fairly easy to get to.

With old windshield and rubber, it is a problem getting that old rubber back in the right spot and not pulled from the frame. Because of this, I have installed mine with the glass already in the frame. the bottom seal can be done from the front. a tedious job, but can be done. Dont try to do it by yourself as you can lose a windshield without much effort. Helps to have someone hold the windshield in place while you work the bottom seal over the sheet metal. Also, tape the windshield to the frame with duct tape on the sides and top, so the glass wont slip. And finally, with the bottom SS trim piece removed, it is easy for the bottom of the frame to spread. The duct tape will help with this. Before you remove your old windshield, look at the gap between the door wing windows and the windshield frame. You will want to duplicate this gap with the new windshield.
