Coil wiring

Post by sierraspider »

I've been doing some routine wiring maintenance, cleaning up grounds/connections to make my 82 FI a little more reliable. (This fixed intermittent starting issues ) Noticed that spade connectors at coil were loose and brittle (One came off on short road trip-easy fix) I thought I would put on new connectors (circular type-can't slide off) Unhooked battery, and did each side individually so nothing would get confused. Easy, right. Now I'm not getting spark. One wire threw me a little bit-the black heaviest gauge wire to RUP side of coil. Seemed to have aluminum outer wire, then a sheath, with copper wire in the middle. I put them together on clip, in other words wires are not separated by insulation (sheath). Is this my problem? If so how do I isolate them. A little frustrated....

that line is a coax cable. the small wire in the middle is the hot wire. the sheath is ground. The design is used in electronics and other equipment that requires shielding from radio frequencies. When you wired them together you may have blown a fuse in the process. Better hope that is all that happened.

I dont think any of the factory wiring was coax. My guess is you have some added device that belongs to. Follow the cable and see where it leads.

Checked out Artiques diagrams, didn't see coax so am I correct in thinking that that wire isn't necessary for the car to run. Perhaps to shield radio from static. I'm still a bit confused but I'll trace it out.

Thanks

Really haven't been able to trace this yellow wire. Don't see it on diagrams. Electrical not my strong suit.

try disconnecting it from the coil and see what you get.

Or connect the center wire to the terminal you were trying to and connect the shield to ground.

If the car won't start since you connected the shield to the center wire it's probably doing something important.

It doesn't run with out it. According to csaba from post http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=24559, it is a sending wire to fuel injecton. So what I'm getting at this type of connector should be availble and the not too difficult to install. I cab't find it on Artiques diagrams. So if anyone has ideas on where to get this type of connector it would be helpful.

Call tech at IAP and they've never heard of a coaxial type wire to coil. Any thoughts out there. I freakin confused and don't want to hook up anything till I sort it.

I also have a 2nd wire to the - side of the coil that isnt on Brad's schematic. It is not coax. 80FI. Anyone know where it goes. It is definitely factory.

Is yours yellow with black sheath. Mine is and mine is also coaxial (weird). I'm freaked about reinstaling for fear of frying another component. But mine also looks factory. If you solve it let me know and I likewise.
