This past Sunday, the Center for Italian Studies at Stony Brook University put on their 9th annual Celebration of
Italian Vehicle Excellence and Beauty (a display of “art forms on wheels” as a means of illustrating one form of Italian culture.)
The weather was perfect (63 degrees in the morning. 78 degrees in the afternoon. Bright sunshine all day.)
I was invited to a pre-show breakfast at a local diner, which is held by the Alfa Romeo Club of Long Island. A nice group of mostly older gentlemen. At 51 years old, I was one of the younger ones there. It was a boisterous group of obviously close friends who have been together for a while. I took some ribbing for having a Fiat rather than an Alfa, and then told them not to worry, I would represent the high-end of the Italian car market. That got a chuckle from the Lamborghini Gallardo owner.
After breakfast, our caravan of 15 cars made its way to the show.
The show itself was well organized. There were plenty of Alfas present, as well as a surprising number of Fiats. Most of them new 500's, but there was an all original one from 1973. There were 5 Fiat Spiders and all were done nicely. There were also a number of Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, and Maserati's, as well as one Lancia. There were also a few Ducati motorbikes.
I got to meet Howard, from this site, and check out his 1979 Spider. I especially liked the wooden Bolla wine box full of spare parts in his trunk (including a clutch pedal).
Enjoy the pictures.

Hey Bruce, thanks for the pics of the event. Looks like a good time.
The second I saw the pink Espada I knew where I’d seen it before. It and its owner was the subject of a great profile in the New York Times a couple years ago. Seems she’s owned the car forever and uses it almost as regular transportation including ferrying her granddaughter around with a car seat in the back.
I can’t link the article, NYT won’t let me, but here is another link to their classic car archive where there is a slide show of the car:

Certain cars somehow make an impression on us in strange ways. I’ve never been a particular fan of Lambo’s, just never appealed to me, but one day, in my early twenties, I was waiting for my bus to NYC and a new Espada passed the bus stop. The guys inside probably commuting to the City. I was immediately hooked.
The Espada has always been considered a second-tier collectable. It is a little weird, the four seats and so forth, but to me it is just so cool. Front engine, 12 Cyl, 5 sp.
BTW, anyone can post pictures of their Spiders in the NYT Classic car section on line. Mine’s there.

There is a link to the article next to the slide show. I was thinking it was a cute story until I got to the part where she traded in a Fiat Spider to get it!

Actually I missed that....but truth be told I'd trade my Spider for an Espada.
My only problem would be coming up with the balance.

i was talking to the owner's son and he said he loved getting picked up from school in it as a kid. the owner used to be a pilot and it's probably one of the few lambo's with a "bumper" sticker on it. it's actually a sticker for a pilot's association on the rear, lower glass panel. definitely a strange car, but i can see the attraction to a pilot. the driver's perspective is much like an airplanes with all the switches and gauges angled to the driver. btw, 3 "people's choice" awards (determined by owners and spectators voting) were given at the show and the spada took third. second went to a fiat x-19 that is owned by the secretary of the alfa club (which provided most of the cars for the show). first place went to one of two identical looking (at least to me) black countach's. so lambo and fiat on the podium with nary a ferrari, maserati, or alfa to be seen.
