Need some help on this matter. Just picked up a 1981 Fiat Spider, it has a loud ticking noise and it gets loud as you accelerate the gas, adjusted the shims on it but noise is still there. Would the injectors be making this noise? Very frustrating.
Thanks
Nick

Re: Loud ticking from engine
Wondering if the timing belt was changed out just before your purchase. Perhaps the #2 con. rod might be just slightly connecting the lobe on the end of the aux shaft.
Something to rule out anyway..

Hey Narfire you hit the nail right on the head, the auxiliary pulley was at 12:00 not 1:00.Started the engine up and it idled good for about 15 mins while adding antifreeze then it just stopped no start, added quick start took awhile to fire up , back fireed and started up , but there is a whistling noise coming from the throttle plate switch as you rev it gets to a higher pitch. Engine ran good but when it reached 240F shut engine down, tried to restart but no luck, sprayed quick start still no luck, do have spark. Any idea what could be going on.
Thanks

Re: Loud ticking from engine
Your last back fire blew off a vacuum line or plug.
The whistling sound is that leak.
For the engine top rib fine and then just die means you need to look for problems with fuel delivery or ignition.
You could have an ignition coil that stops working properly as things heat up.

Any chance you have a large spark jumping off an electrical wire ? Those tick quite a bit, and also cause serious backfires.
