Pininfarina is the design studio that created the Fiat Spider along w/ a lot of Ferraris and other makes.Arguably the finest auto designers ever! They are linked to these Spiders because they took over the mfg. and marketing of the Fiat Spider after 1982.From 83 to 85 they are rebadged as Pininfarina Spiders. There you go ,Fiat 101 from one redneck to another!

Nope, they're all called spiders. What you have is one of the last "Fiat" spiders.

If you want to learn more about Pininfarina, just enter it into any search engine - you'll find plenty about the old boy out there. (Nick will be impressed, I actually know what a search engine is)

Simply put, the original Fiat Spiders are referred to as the Fiat 124 Spider (the 124 was made in other configurations including a coupe), the 2.0 liter cars from 1979 are called the Fiat 2000 Spider and from 1983 the Pininfarina Azzurra. There were some subtle design changes including the location and number of mirrors (see the red car at the top of this page), slightly revised dash board, no rear seat, different brakes and near the end of production -- rack and pinion steering.

Pininfarina is an Italian design house tha is the Versace of auto design. They have designed many of the worlds most beautifull cars including most Ferraris, allot of Fiat and Alfa sports cars. They are still an active company and not only design beautifully sculpted autos but they now design fine pens, luggage and stationary accesories.
Other famous Italian design houses include Bertone and Italdesign.
Our beloved Fiat 124 Spider were masterfully sculpted by American born designer Tom Tjaarda commisioned by Pininfarina. The 124 Spider design was based on the prototype Corvette Rondine (swallow) and a Ferrari (cant remember the model number). The major design carry over from these two cars was the swallow shapped rear deck, kind of a mild finn look as well as the side profile. Apparently the front end was a little dificult to sculp because of the space limitations in the 124 short wheel base chasis.
The Pininfarina badged spiders were finaly discontinued in 1885 to make room for Pininfarinas latest body/chasis it would need to produce, the Cadillac Allante.
All Fiat 124 Spiders have a pininfarina 'F' crest on the lower rear fender. The pininfarina badged cars had pininfarina written in letter form.
Just keep in mind that your favorite Ferrari was most likely also a product of Pininfarina design.

[quote="kristoj"]the 2.0 liter cars from 1979 are called the Fiat 2000 Spider and from 1983 the Pininfarina Azzurra.

Only in the US. In Europe, when Pininfarina took over production, they became "Spider Europa"

The fun part is that most of the badges are the same from car to car so you can have the exact same badge as one on a Ferrari or an Alfa. Pininfarina also makes & designs a lot of other things like kitchen appliances, espresso machines and even cell phones.

I wanted to add- in 1985 the dropped the name "Azzurra" and changed it to "Spiderpininfarina".

Also form '83-'85 they built 500 Volumex models, which had an Abarth Volumex engine and a ton of other performance changes. Sadly they were only sold in Germany. Ahhh... someday....
