the one closest the driver opens and shuts the fresh air door under the windshield cowling. The lever in the middle open and closes the hot coolant valve to the heater. The one on the right force air to the floor or to the defroster vents. Each lever slot has a triangle. the point of the triangle indicates which direction is closed. Fat end is open.
No air: left down, middle up, right down.
fresh air: left up, middle up, right down.
heat: left up, middle down, right down.
defrost: left up, middle down, right up

The ideogram symbols are a bit confusing, but:
The lever all the way to the left controls how much outside fresh air enters the car. All the way toward back of car gives you max outside fresh air.
The middle lever controls the temperature. Lever all the way toward the back of the car turns off heat, providing max cold temp. All the way forward gives max high temperature.
The lever all the way to the right controls where the air goes. All the way forward gives you air flow to the floor. All the way back toward the back of the cars gives you air flow to the windshield defroster vents. Lever midway gives you a mix of floor and defroster vents.

Is there a good source for replacement cables? The mixer cable on my '69 is broken. Right now, air goes both to the vents and floor which is not too bad but I'd eventually like to fix it now that the fall driving season is on us.

Don't get too frustrated by the car being unable to stop blowing air from the defrost vents and floor at the same time, the way the thing is made you're kind of setting a priority where one gets more than the other, but usually you always get something from the top vents.
