windscreen and dash

Does the dash go in before the windshield? or doesn't it matter? I've got a gap at the base where windshield meets dash.

Doesn't matter, they don't touch. There should be a rubber strip that covers that gap.

I've tried it both ways. For me, it was easier to align the windshield seal properly with the dash out (instead of the other way around).

Yes I too noticed a gap between the dash and windshield. I thought that my dash just shrunk from age. Can someone elaborate on this trim piece or an alternative?

The "trim" is part of your windshield seal....it's all one piece.

Not uncommon to have the gap. Things move over time. You can close the gap by loosening the bolts where the dash is attached to the frame ( behind the glove box and behind the instrument panel) as well as the two screws at the lower bottom edges of the dash near the doors. Gently push toward the windshield. You will need a coat hanger or other small device to get under the lip of the rubber piece and work it back over the top of the dash. You may need to tighten the dash in place before trying to get the rubber lip back over the top of the dash. Kind of a pain, but achievable with some patience.
