How did you manage to get outside air with the cone air intake setup?

If that Q was for me, you will notice I have cut away the rubber seal from the front that seals the hood of the engine bay and also have one of those plastic guards to prevent hot air going back in.

Top of my head guess....$2-3000 would be a good budget over the year. I did it that way and the $$$ I spent was a little bit easier to deal with as it trickled out over a year.
That is what I ended up doing, it is a good idea as there is no real rush to finish it

Does my 1982 Fiat have an ECU..... does my spider have a computer that governs the fuel delivery and if so can the Electronic Control Unit be reprogrammed to allow an increase in fuel flow or whatever needs to be done to improve performance.

Has this been done before and if so was there any improvement when the ECU was reprogrammed?

I am gathering all the info that everyone has suggested above and will make improvements little by little in the future.

I like the take your time on a separate spare engine Idea.

Furthermore, on some other engine performance web sites, I have read that hot engine bay temperatures that have been sucked into the intake via a cone filter that was not set up to have a good supply of cool outside ambient air is capable of cooking heads. So for this reason I have reservations in doing that modification even though it will increase HP.

Possibly an air scoop tube set up attached to the front below the grill area or below the radiator somehow.

So regarding the air filter modifications and the tight quarters in our engine compartment, I believe that there isn't enough cool outside air that can easily enter the intake.

Our ECU's on the L-Jet are very old technology and not programmable, if you are chasing true HP an aftermarket ECU with spark control is the way to go. Regarding cooking heads, I haven't heard of that re eng bay temps, you'll often find the facts can be different to what the cause was ?? True it is best to have cold air into the engine, this can be solved many ways, on the opposite side of the airbox in front of the water washer bottle you will notice a circular hole cut out, this hole was for the cars that had carb's to allow fresh air, I'd be doing something like that on the air-box side. My temporary measure was to cut short the rubber seal to allow fresh air in. Personally I'm not fond of cutting holes on the hood, just my thing..
Keep us posted on the route that you decide to go..

How I would build a Fiat twin cam: first stay with the 1.8 or 1.6, they rev better

Send the engine to Midwest 124:

Have the entire engine torn down, go for the next overbore with high compression pistons, all parts balanced, have the head gone through to port it, clean it up and go with oversize valves, choose a proper IDF intake manifold, choose an exhaust manifold (from Auto Ricambi or Marks equally fine but not vintage appearing), have the intake and exhaust manifolds matched to the head, 40:80 cams installed and adjustable cam sprockets and a missing tooth wheel from Millersmule. Add in IDF type throttle bodies, a stand alone injection system that also handles ignition such as Mega Squirt and reinstall. Tune to your preference and run with the big boys.

Not cheap and not done tomorrow...

The only people that think that are the ones who have never driven a hi-po 2 liter, they make power in the higher rpm ranges too, as opposed to a stock 2L. One can't beat extra displacement when looking for more power and torque.

The 2.0 has always felt coarse to me, certainly more power I am sure. To each ones own 8)
