back seat belts

Post by 4babycar »

Has anyone added seat belts in the back? We have two little ones so it would be a worthwhile addition(who cares if they have leg room- they are short!)

I found this person's restoration pics- http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2463752- and I'm pretty sure I can see rear belts but he doesn't mention it in his log- let me know what you guys think!

it's pretty common to add belts if you have little ones. Some of the early cars had threaded inserts behind the seats that make it real easy to install belts. Otherwise you have to drill some holes and use large washers

No need to drill holes! They are already there. My 76 has em. Apparently, the spider ssent to europe needed rear belts long before it was required in teh US. So as a result, they had the mounting holes for them, but the US cars were beltless in back. To find them, remove your rear seat back, and bottom. The are located on the rear of the bottm cushion area, int eh outside corners, and two in the middle. The middle ones are about 6 inched apart (3 inches off center of the car) on the bottom.
I have heard that some cars had the holes covered with undercoating, so you may need to poke around with a screwdriver to find them. When I tttok my seat out, all 4 holes were in plain sight.
I have one daughter (Lilly). I have been considering installing a 4 point harness to use in a booster seat. SHe is 4 years old, and too big for a car seat. Another option is to source some 3 point seat belts (shoulder belts) and try to install them back there.
Look close, and you will see the mounting holes..............Happy hunting!

I have an '82 and there were no holes. I had to drill them myself, which was not a big deal at all. You just have to jack up the rear of the car and make sure do don't drill through any brake or fuel lines. Only took about an hour or so to do the entire installation by myself (would have been quicker with another person to hold the bolt while the nut is threaded on from the other side). I bought these in the tan and they matched the factory belts in front pretty well http://www.seatbeltsplus.com/mm5/mercha ... -Seatbelts
