Gave my new to me 82 Spider an oil change and after driving it for a 100 miles I notice a tap Tap sound from the driver side valve cover area.
Here is some history.... the previous owner had the timing belt and water pump replaced just before she sold the vehicle to me. Should the valve lash adjustment have been done at that time also?

What type and weight oil?
Check the valve clearances, since you don't know if they have been done.

Thanks for posting. So if i understood correctly you add the thickness of the gage to the thickness of the shim you pull out and the sum is the thickness of the new shim. I remember another alternative where you had to sit down with pen and paper and do calculations.

You forgot to subtract the clearance you want. Otherwise you'd end up with zero clearance.AriK wrote:Thanks for posting. So if i understood correctly you add the thickness of the gage to the thickness of the shim you pull out and the sum is the thickness of the new shim.

... and that would be a very bad thing.vandor wrote:You forgot to subtract the clearance you want. Otherwise you'd end up with zero clearance.
What makes it easier is either having a calculator, or a very good mechanic friend who can swap in and out of imperial and metric shim sizes and lash ranges at ease... and frighteningly so. I needed to break out an excel spreadsheet to even think about it!
