So I’m looking at your picture, already starting to chuckle over the multiple punch lines it inspires: the name of the motel, the fact that you can get stuffed and mounted there, and that color TV has made it to town.

Then, like an old Jean Shepard short story, it triggers a long forgotten memory. I’ve been to Jackson ME, a long time ago. And I wasn’t just “there”, I was there in the middle of winter, January I think, maybe 1971.

Here’s a picture of the car we drove from New Jersey. An amazingly good car I might add. It belonged to my best friend’s girlfriend. I’m sure none of our jalopies would have made it. She had bought it new, she lived on 27th St. on the West side of NYC I have no idea where she parked it, probably on the street. She was the head night nurse in the Emergency Room at Belleview Hospital. Quite a gal.

Jackman, for those of you who aren’t familiar with the place, is a tiny town of less than 1000 souls on the Canadian border of central Maine. My buddy has this wacky idea that he would buy a hunting cabin up there for a very modest price. He’d seen an ad for the place in some hunting magazine or some such thing. We drove all Friday night, the last 100 miles inland on 2 lane secondary roads fully snow covered but packed down and plowed expertly, with enormous berms along the shoulders. At sub-zero temps they don’t like to get down to the pavement, traction is better with the snow pack. No salt, it wouldn’t work at those temps anyway.

We arrived at about 4:00 AM or so outside the B & B where he had made reservations but we didn’t have the guts to go knocking on the door, so at -20 F we tried to sleep in the car for a few hours with the motor running and the heat on full blast. Once we saw the lights go on we joined the owners for a welcome hot breakfast. The “hunting” cabin turned out to be the shell of an old wooden structure of un-determinant age with about 3 foot of snow in the “kitchen”. It wasn’t quite the bargain it seemed. Of course that night we found the only open bar in town and along with its 3 regulars drank till closing time. They told us it was the most fun they’d had all winter.

We left for home sometime Sunday afternoon, racing for the coast and civilization in front a major snowstorm attacking us from the rear.

Dumb & Dumber.
