Putting a 2L together, crank is in and I'm ready to torque the cap bolts. Should I oil the threads on the cap bolts? Factory manual and Croft book are silent on this but I read an article that said true torque readings on any threaded fasteners cannot be done properly unless the threads are lubed. Note that head bolts are oiled before installing.

Yep, I always keep a squirt can of engine oil handy, as well as anti seize compound, assembly lube and gasket goo when doing an engine. A squirt of oil on threads that are torqued.

I oiled all mine. Just finished rebuild and should go back in the next week or so. I guess we'll find out when we fire her up!carl wrote:Putting a 2L together, crank is in and I'm ready to torque the cap bolts. Should I oil the threads on the cap bolts? I think Fiat used to say lube them with motor oil and let it drip off for 30 minutes. I assume that means use sparingly, and don't assemble dry.
