time to restomoderate the interior

Post by lawprofdave »

I have done the bodywork on my 2000 spider. Not original sheetmetal, non-original color, I have changed the ADHA to an ADFA, putting in aftermarket front seats. So I am looking for ideas for the rear interior space. Don't need a seat back there. No one would stay back there except for hiding mice. It would have alot more space without the seat. Any thoughts, photos, etc. of what others have done would be appreciated. Don't worry about me copying, though I may be inspired by something. I'll try to post photos of the car at the moment.

Allisonsautomotive sell a fiberglass base and back that replicates the later models.

I took some MDF, some marine carpet, a pair of new 6.5" speakers, and a jigsaw - and made my own! (Sorry no photos and distanced from car right now!)

Interesting, though I would still lose all of the space on the sides of the package shelf if I put all of the stock side pieces back in. Also, my black plastic inserts that go behind the rear side panels, are starting to self-destruct.

I often thought about removing everything ... insulate and carpet the whole area ... sure would be more space for camping gear and the dog would dig it for sure....

someday when the fiat is not my daily driver and I consider it a fair weather car I also toy with the idea of removing the top and all the hardware.. probably at that point I will delete the back seat and all the paneling

Removing my old back seat, side panels, carpet, POR15 the area, cutting the MDF, installing and carpeting took an entire Saturday - which I thought was pretty good going!

The only thing I regret not doing is putting cupboards in the bottom..

Here's what I did with mine. Feel free to steal, as I did when I created this.

It's a package shelf with a lockable storage area underneath and speakers on top. I also added a power outlet in the center. I think every element of this came from ideas I got on this forum.

Jay, I really like your solution, though it still takes up more space than I would like. Azruss's project is more what I wanted and I could do something similar. In the meantime and while I am still getting ideas, I will carpet the whole space. Even the shelf takes up space (and time to construct). I can live with a bigger simple carpeted trunk-like area and see how it goes. I will post photos when it is in.
BTW, how do I post a photo to the forum? I tried and it just showed up as a link, instead of embedded in the thread.

size your photos to no more than 700 pixels wide and upload to a photo service. I use Hostingbytes 2. Simple, no membership. Then copy the URL off the photo sight and paste it in your message.

Here is a thread on how to post pictures directly to the forum:

And here is another picture-posting thread:

And here is a link to a map of Spider owner’s locations. Many forum members have listed their locations.

I went for the first gen RX7 bench and buckets. The little tubs with doors is nice.

Personally I would just insulate and carpet it, but I'm a minimalist. Storage space for me just means throwing a duffle behind the seats, and particle board is HEAVY. I don't mean that as a criticism of the nice work the others have done, but when I removed the amps and MDF subwoofer enclosure that the previous owner had stuck in the back of the old 16V GTI I bought, I was shocked at the weight (nearly 50kg). 50kg, all hanging behind the rear axle in that case. Put another way, I would have had to add 10hp to the motor to get the same benefit as removing those 50kg...
