Intermitten temp gauge

Post by red107 »

I was driving my car the and notice the temp gauge would peg out. After a few moment it would return to operating temp. Do you think I'm looking at a bad ground, sending unit, or faulty gauge? I know the car wasn't over heating. I pulled over and everything seemed normal. The fan does kit on and off normally. I do have a infrared thermometer but it was at the house. Any ideas?

Probably a bad connection at the sensor on the top of the head at the rear, the one that pegs the needle in an actual overheat situation. The front one sends the proportional resistive temp reading to the gauge, the rear one just pegs it above a certain point.

Not trying to be "that guy", but it is actually the front (between plugs 1 and 2) sending unit that pegs the gauge in an overheat situation.
The rear one (between plugs 2 and 3) is the one that operates the gauge under normal temp conditions.

I can't remember if the light came on or not. I will check again this weekend.

I believe I found the problem. G3 the ground above the ignition switch. I will find out after a test drive. Still nice weather here in Eastern Carolina for top down driving.
