I don't know what the letters stand for however I am pretty sure the "A" is the intake cam wheel and the "S" is the exhaust.

the reason i was asking is because the haynes manual has a diagram and it refers to the S and the A as the timing marks for the cam gears---pg 27 and i am sure its wrong--the holes in the gears are the marks that you align with the pointers.

S is for scarico (exhaust in Italian) A is for Aspirizione (air intake).
