just got my 124 1608 head back from the machine shop, i'm setting the lash myself -- on the workbench. does anyone know the best tool or best way to be able to turn the cam on the bench (overcome the spring tension)--to set up the individual valve lash? thanks

Re: TURNING THE CAMS ON THE WORKBENCH QUESTION
I put the head in/on a "work-mate" so the valves have a place to go when turning. I just put a spanner on the cam wheel bolt and turn....

Re: TURNING THE CAMS ON THE WORKBENCH QUESTION
did all my exhaust shims--i started out real loose and just kept increasing shim size until i got the proper clearance-- took a little longer but i didnt have to do any math heated, bent, and ground down a brake spoon to make a tool to compress the buckets to lock the fiat valve tool in place- piece of cake i just cant beleive the shims stay in place in the buckets, when the engine is running.

Re: TURNING THE CAMS ON THE WORKBENCH QUESTION
The shims get hot after about 3 seconds of running and are beaten down into place with such a high frequency they have nowhere to go. The clearance also closes to damn near 0 when hot.71124spider wrote:did all my exhaust shims--i started out real loose and just kept increasing shim size until i got the proper clearance-- took a little longer but i didnt have to do any math heated, bent, and ground down a brake spoon to make a tool to compress the buckets to lock the fiat valve tool in place- piece of cake i just cant beleive the shims stay in place in the buckets, when the engine is running.
