Post by bsharp »

78 fiat 124--sitting at red light-oil pressure light came on-drove one mile to home. I would hope it is sending unit--any one had this problem and can the mechanical oil pump just quit

Did the car overheat or behave oddly? Ran ok that last mile? Revving normally? No burning smells?

I had the same problem recently but knew the pressure was OK because I have a mechanical pressure gauge. Finally diagnosed the cause to be a blockage in the oil passage within the filter housing, that leads to the sending unit for the light. Cleaned it out with a piece of coat hanger wire and compressed air and it's all good now. I've no idea what caused the blockage - something that didn't make it into the filter.

That hole is actually a treaded jet and can be removed and cleaned.
