Silly question: installing shocks

Post by bran100 »

Okay, I've rebuilt my motor myself, and I'm just wrapping up a front end rebuild myself, but something that should be so incredibly simple has me perplexed.

How does the top of the kyb shock attach to the tower? I see the stud poking through, and then install the rubber bushing, steel washer, then nut, correct? The stud sticks up so high, there's no way the nut will screw down enough to put any tension on the washer or bushing, before it hits the stud shoulder. I have the car on all four wheels now, and there's at least an inch gap between the bottom of the stud shoulder and the top of the washer.

So, looking at the left over parts, I assume that one of these bushings, and perhaps a washer, must go between the top of the shock body and the shock tower? What's the order of parts from the top of the shock body, to the nut at the top, and what goes above and what goes below the shock tower?

when you stuff the shock assy up into the car, there should be a washer and bushing on top of the shock.
Then when you look at it from the top to should install the bushing then the next large washer and then the nuts.

Thanks, I just now put one of those washers on top of the shock, then the rubber bushing in the photo. Then stuffed it in, followed by another rubber bushing, a washer, and a nut. Seems to be good to go.

most tube shocks install the same way. on each side of the chassis you should have the rubber donut next to the sheet metal and then the washer with the flange toward the donut. To install, put washer, then donut on the shock. stick it up into the hole. then from the top place the donut, washer, nut and jam nut in that order.
