Back in the Bay.....and dreading SMOG Tests!

Post by TRSmith99 »

Hey All!

I'm looking for technical help. My wife has a 1977 Fiat Spider. Its originally a CA car. We bought the car in Oregon. The Previous Owner (PO) had stripped all the CA SMOG items off and out - which was all well and good in Oregon.

Fast forward.... We have moved back to CA and registration is due. I haven't even attempted the SMOG test yet. I'm 95% sure it'll fail (if nothing else just b/c of visual inspection and the fact that the CA Emissions equipment has all been removed).

So.... I'm thinking I have only 2 options...
1. Sell the car to someone outside CA (probably back in Portland)
2. Purchase and re-install all the CA Emissions equipment

My wife is of the opinion of #1 and then buying a 1975 (or older) Fiat and starting over with the rebuild.

I am of the opinion that since the interior, body/paint, brakes are all done.... all that is really left is the exhaust and few electrical items.

So.... in order to quantify the "damage", anyone have the "full list" of components that will need to be ordered in order to make a 1977 Fiat CA SMOG compliant?

Thanks!

I'm game for whatever makes the most sense financially and will allow me to pass SMOG. Do you have a parts list? Drawings? Can you point me where to look?

For the CA users....
If I add the Fuel Injection system from a later spider, plus a catalytic converter and new muffler, will SMOG still flag the car as "non-compliant" since it does not have the original equipment?

As long as you get everything including tank, fuel pump, wiring harness, twin relay, you may have to run some new wires and possibly a return fuel line?? I'm sure others from the US will pipe up soon. They come up for sale every now and then.
If you could pick up a very rusty FI car for very little cash you will have all the bits to make it work (and some more)

I don't know the laws to say if it is allowed of not but by my understanding the FI cars with the catalytic converter passed??

What mechanic / shop are you using? My son just moved to SF with his car and is in almost the same boat. His is a 79 non CA car.

an FI conversion would require a trip to the referee so they can certify that the installation is compliant with the requirements for the proper year. Not a big deal, I've done it

I searched quite a bit through forums and yelp. I ultimately took the fiat up to "Alfaguy Motors" in Novato, CA. He obviously focuses on Alfa's, but has experience with Fiat's too. He was very thorough. Did exactly what he said he would do and did it on time.

BTW - he has about 5 bays with some REALLY great cars to admire. ; >

Mark - any chance you can point me in the right direction to get the list of parts for CA SMOG? I'm okay re-installing the car as "stock" for a 1977 unless there is a "performance improvement" by using another configuration (such as the suggested Fuel Injection from a later model).

Suggestions would be helpful....
