replacing emblems?
The trunk emblem (1983) is hidden behind a sheet metal shield that is part of the inner structure. How do you get the retainers off the emblem pins without damaging anything?

If its like my 81, that metal cover is pretty soft and you can bend it enough to get at it with a small socket or nut driver.

Re: replacing emblems?
I just got new hood/trunk emblems for my 81. I wasn't sure if I should pry or tap or unscrew. The new emblems ad two unthreaded pins, so I used a plastic putty knife/scraper and slowly worked it up. Once I was under the emblem, it came up to reveal old glue. The old emblems were pretty worn, but I suppose they could be replacements - I don't know. This took care of the worry about the metal piece inside the trunk. Now I am looking to used some sort of rubber sheath on the pins along with glue to make it a bit more snug.
Good luck to all. I appreciate the site as a new owner and love the fact that some of us are keeping these great cars on the road.

The emblems with the non threaded pins use a plastic insert in the hood holes. They are available from some of the auto parts suppliers that frequent the forum . They also sell the rubber gasket that should go between the emblem and painted hood surface to seal it better and protect your paint.

Thanks, I did just that. I got two small rubber rings for each pin at Ace Hardware that were a nice, snug fit. Then I got emblem glue from O'Reilly and stuck them on. We'll see if this was wise or not, but I put plumber's putty around the ring to further assist keeping water out. I haven't hose tested the seal, but it seems (seams) good.
