When I am driving, my clutch seems to take forever to wind down so I can shift without crunching gears. First is almost impossible to shift into, even when sitting at a light with my foot on the clutch. I adjusted to clutch today and it seems like I have about an inch of free play.
What did I do wrong? Its a new clutch and flywheel was cut and polished. Rebuilt gearbox and new pilot bearing...
Thanks,
Brian

Re: clutch adjustment question
Sounds like a bearing issue. Input bearing.

At the pedal correct?bbuckl wrote: I adjusted to clutch today and it seems like I have about an inch of free play.
You can try tightening it down 1/4" more, and see if anything improves. You have the correct Trans fluid type (GL-1) and level correct?
What this the same symptom that caused you to replace the clutch?

Re: clutch adjustment question
I had the gearbox completely rebuilt. The mainshaft bearings were completely shot. The shaft was actually moving around in the case. New bearings, synchros and assorted other parts. I changed the clutch when everything was apart so it all would be fresh when it went back together.
I filled it with NAPA GL-1 and the level seems ok. When I check it in the car, should the front be higher than the rear? The last time I checked it, the car was up on 4 jackstands and the car was level. When I opened up the fill, some oil flowed from the hole.
I'm going to try to adjust the clutch again. Maybe I still need to get some play out of the pedal.
Thanks,
Brian

Re: clutch adjustment question
with the car stopped and the engine off can you shift the gears easily, if yes, and it is hard to shift the gears with the engine on and the car stationary, then you have a pilot bearing/bushing that is dragging ( ie acting like the clutch is engaged, by applying rotational force/movement to the trans input shaft)

Re: clutch adjustment question
Well, I pulled the gearbox out last weekend...
The pilot bearing that I put in 2 months and 25 miles ago is shot. It felt fine when I installed it, but now its catching and binding up..
I also found the front seal on the gearbox was leaking oil into the bellhousing, so I brought it back to the shop that did the rebuild to have that changed out (and to check the mainshaft bearings that still seem to make noise).
This is getting frustrating. At this rate, I'll be lucky to be driving by the Fall.
