Engine Replacement

Post by Spyder »

I am toying with the idea of replacing my 1800 engine with a 2000. Has anyone else done this type of modification? I think that I need to replace the crossmember and use a 2000 hood but the rest looksa like it should be adaptable. Any thoughts?

Spyder,

I haven't done this mod, but I can offer some thoughts.

First questions really is - why? I think you'll get more torque with the 2000, but with the low gearing the 1800-based Spiders have wouldn't you prefer to have revs-a-plenty?

I don't think you need a different cross member. I seem to recall that's only a problem with some of the pre-1800 applications.

You don't need another hood. Rotating the distributor 180 degrees takes care of that (if there's interference). But then the plug wiring looks kind of funky.

If someone was giving me a good clean 2000 and I had a clapped out 1800, I'd go for it. Meanwhile, my preference is the 1800 I have.

If you do this, save your 1800 intake manifold (especially if it's single-plane), carb, and head (in case you want to increase compression by a squidgen).

the 2L with an 1800 head makes an excellent street motor. I'd recommend it! Gobs of torque throughout the power range too. With mild cams, a big carb, teensy bit of head work and a good exhaust you will have a kick-ass car that is a blast to drive. Change the crossmember if you have one, it'll make hood clearance MUCH better. Otherwise you have to cut some of the inner hood braces to clear an air cleaner and dist cap
