Replacing a catalyst with a muffler?

Post by Kevin1 »

I am looking to eliminate the catalyst (1980, 4 bolt flanges) but don't want to create a lot more noise. From the catalyst back is the stainless exhaust from Fun Imported in CT, so the car is already louder than stock. What comes to mind is using a straight-thru glass pack muffler os some sort. A slip-on type would require cutting the flanges off of the down pipe and the mid pipe.

So before I go start carving up my exhaust, has anyone done this and if so, what muffler might fit?

just measure it, and hit up ebay/autozone. Cut the cat out, and weld in the new section. easy peasy.

What he said..just use pipe, no glass pack if you want sound.

I have the same setup and ended with a resonator at the place of the catalytic converter.

I'd use a non-glass pack resonator. One tat is straight through, like the stock ones.
No idea why people use glass packs. The fiberglass often comes out and plugs up the muffler behind it. I've seen it happen very soon after installation.
