Big firewall hole seals?

Post by zachmac »

So, I've inherited a car with lots of bigopen holes around all the wiring pass throughs in the firewall. Makefor a nice warm smelly, wet passenger compartment. I've searched all of the usual vendor sites but it doesn't look like any one offeres them? Particualrly the one for the big harness on the driver's sidethat passes through just to the right of the steering column (sort of above the gas pedal. What do people do to seal it up (other than that messy spray foam)?

Black silicone. If the hole is large, pack in some poly fiber or nylon screen to lend support.

First thing that comes to mind...cut an old inner tube, pop rivet in place and black silicone the edges? Years ago when I was putting my car back together I backed the floor plugs up with roof patch...Smelled a bit for a day or so but after covering it with sound deadener and carpet, no worries or smell. How big is big?

Guys, with all due respect, did any of you bother to read my initial post? :? I ain't talking about lost plugs or holes in the floor.

I am talking about the places where the factory passed through the big wiring cable bundles. The are supposed to have some sort of rubber seal around the cabling to minimize the air / water leakage around the cable into the car. You've all got a big wire bundle coming out just left of center facing forward that runs over and along the driver's inner fender and a smaller one that comes out behind and below the overflow bottle and runs down the passenger side inner fender. I have nothing but a hole (no big rubber grommet) on the one coming out of the drivers side BUT a great big wiring bundle! how do I seal around the wiring bundle?

I did read and I know what you require. The rubber plugs have a slit in them with a corresponding hole to allow the wire loom through. They have a recess in the edge to sit in the sheet metal around the hole. If you can't source one perhaps as mentioned try looking at a piece of inner tube. Now it won't sit obviously, that is why I mentioned pop rivet with some back up gunk.(silicone)
I'll look on my car outside and have a look as to what I have.

Thank you, exactly. I wasn't trying to be insulting to anyone, but it seems like someone would sell those seals?

I've checked at least five vendor sites and nothing? I guess a generic one will do of course, I'll just have to do the old upside down under the dash routine to measure and install as the hole is question is just about hidden / inaccessible from the engine side due to the twin weber setup. I'll also of course have to disconnect everything and pull the cable into the footwell first but that is no big deal as I just finished cleaning it up, correcting a lot of PO sins and re-wrapping it.

BTW, short of taking the webers and intake off it is again basically inaccessible from the engine side so I'll have to do whatever I do from the footwell (really don't want to pull the manifold off).

Hi,

I am restoring a 69 Alfa Spider as well as a 81 Fiat Spider and I think that there are some firewall cable grommets that might work. I can't measure mine until a few days as it is in another storage place.

Check out the Alfa BB for used ones, they do come up

Thanks, Rick

Thanks but no, that's not it, I need to plug a round hole while passing through a wire bundle. I searched every product under "rubber", "seals", and "electrical" on AR, IAP, VAS, Midwest-Bayless, etc. I think Steele will have what I need.
