Replacing inner and outer bearings on front of my 78 Spider. I understand I should replace the inner and outer bearing races when replacing bearings. Cant find any place that sells them. Does anybody know where I can buy them or do I really need to replace them?

Re: Where can I buy front inner and outer races.
Midwestbayless: item not found. I already ordered rear bearings and checked for them then. A lot of people suggest Midwestbayless, Autoricombi, International auto parts and so far they dont have 1 out of every 4 items i look for. Has anyone actually bought these bearing races from any company? And no, the front wheel outer bearings that I bought from autopartswharehouse.com dont look anything like the bearings for a 1978 Fiat Spider. They sent regular Beck Arnley that look like every other straight bearing. Even videos of owners replacing bearings on front use bearing like the manual shows. And 2 of them showed replacing the bearing races.
How many different 78 Spiders are out there. Was there a big change mid year that Fiat made a lot of changes. I have the late78 Spider w/79 door handles. Getting frustrated on ordering what should be a standard part. The companies all say for 1978 Fiat 124 Spider 1800, but for example, I have received 2 different flasher units for turn signals. One had 2 terminals ( mine uses a three terminal and another sent a square unit to fit the holder for my original round 3 terminal unit.
Anyone else having these problems? Wondering if I need to order from outside USA.

When I bought mine they came with the races. I think got them at Autoricambi (I've basically bought a car from them piece by piece!). Here's one of the bearings on their web site. Looks like the race is included from the picture.

I cant imagine ever selling a bearing with out the race... as I recall they were only offered as a matched set by Fiat. Possibly they are slightly less expensive if someone bought the bearing and no race. These are such 'bread 'n butter' parts, I also can't imagine any vendor being out of complete units.

Texsardo,I was refering to AutoRicambi,IAP,Midwest Bayless,Vicks,Obert,etc... I had no idea there was a special case in the 78 model year.Good luck, someone must have run into this before.

Re: Where can I buy front inner and outer races.
Good grief, there is nothing special about the '78 model year as far as bearings are concerned. If the front bearings you bought from autopartswharehouse.com are not tapered and don't look like the bearings that came in the car then they obviously sold you the wrong parts. Furthermore, the reason none of the Fiat vendors list just the bearing race is because tapered bearings are almost always sold with the race and bearing together. If you order front bearings from any of the Fiat vendors listed above it will come with both.Texsardo wrote:Midwestbayless: item not found. I already ordered rear bearings and checked for them then. You don't need to order your Fiat parts from outside the USA. You just need to pick a quality Fiat parts vendor (my personal choice is Ramzi and Csaba @ autoricambi). Most of them know the cars inside and out, and have been repairing the cars and selling parts for years, so you'll be sure to get the correct parts the first time (most of the time).
