BAD GAS OR ?

Post by sierraspider »

Just took my 82 FI for 3 or 4, 200 miles jaunts. It ran great until the latest one when I filled up about 100 miles from home and within 15 minutes the car was running rough, like it had a miss and wouldn't idle at all. Can bad gas make it run this crappy? If so is a gas stabilizer and injector cleaner the solution. If this isn't the problem any idea of a troubleshooting sequence to find the problem. I don't have a manual (one's on order) so if anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all

In my car experience,it usually isn't bad gas.The cheapest thing would be to run a bottle of HEET gas treatment, that displaces water.I would be looking at the big air hose from your AFM,and all the others to make sure you don't have a hose loose and sucking air somewhere.Good luck

Quick thought for you - are all the spark plugs attached to the distributor properly? One of the wires came loose on my #3, and I had similar problems.

Thanks guys-I'll check out both-the AFM hose seems most suspect as I've had issues before but never to this extent. I'll let you know.

Thanks for your time

As mentioned check the plugs and the plug leads. I had my dist. set such that one of the leads was rubbing on the hood underliner and over time both wore to a point It was arcing from the lead to the metal. The engine did run rough. I've had plugs crack for no apparent reason and arc to the head as well. A look while in a darker carport will confirm.

Think I just found it. Missing bolt on intake plenum, right in front of my face. When I spray carb cleaner on area, revs pick up so its sucking air. Sprayed every other suspect place, no increase in revs. So it appears that when it warms up its pulling a little extra air and the problem is getting worse. Going to replace gasket and that should do it.

Hope this helps someone in the future.

If it was a missing bolt you may not need a new gasket. Just add the bolt to proper spec and see if that does the trick
