Re: spitting thru carb when cold
I re checked the choke this morning and it seemed to operate well. I let it idle until it was at operating temperature and then gunned it and it spit up thru carb. Then the idle dropped VERY low for a minute but didnt stall. Im starting to think timing although i had my friend slowly accellerate and the timing light showed very steady. When it was up high in revs the timing light showed way more retard although consistent. Is that what it should do? Is it possible i set up the pertronix slightly wrong? Is that even possible?

After the engine is fully warmed up, try moving your timing to 12 or 15 degrees of advance at idle.
Drive is and see how it performs. Go from there.

George, sounds like a timing issue. Work through it.

Re: spitting thru carb when cold
I advanced it to 12-15 per Roys suggestion and it runs Ok although at 3000-4000 RPM's it feels "sluggish". Doesnt quite shudder like it's missing but feels like its not all there, does that make sense? Should I do a compression test? It still occasionally spits through the carb if i gun it quickly. If i feather it it's fine. Could my secondary jet be clogged? Would that create an issue like this? Sorry for all the questions...
So with the advance it backfires less (although i thought i might have heard it pop thru the tailpipe once this morning) through the carb but isnt totally gone. i will advance it a bit more now to see if I notice any other difference.
