So - does this photo (and this one http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=27679) help support those of us who are bumperless that the stock piece of scaffolding on the front isn't that helpful in a prang?

One key advantage of the bumper....When your nose dips, the bumper hits the tires of the car in front of you so you can slide under it and have their car land on top of your head, otherwise you disentigrate passing through their trunk. :D

that bumper is nearly pristine, I don't think it was much of a help in this crash

A tube type bumper like the Spiders will help transfer the crash energy to the main structural members of the car. In larger crash it can take up the initial impact.
