this seems to be contagious and perhaps a reason to upgrade those brakes. This one is at Copart in Oklahoma City

...on the flip-side, it's a good demonstration of the crumple zones for these cars and how the passenger area has remained relatively intact after what appears to be a major shunt.

I suspect the truth is more that the collision speed is a lot lower than you would expect, and there isn't really much crumpling going on there, just a bit of random folding with very little energy dissipation.

Funny, but yes, you can never tell with these things.courtenay wrote:Or maybe the garage door?WYSpider wrote:Hit Radio Flyer wagon in drive way.
Might look OK from the outside but even 2 inches of travel from the brake pedal will give you enough multiple fractures to put you in a wheelchair for life. Modern cars have plastic clips to hold the pedals so they snap off under pressure. Never take for granted how safe a plastic bin like a new Honda civic is compared to they-dont-make-them-like-they-used-to cars.

I hit a deer a couple weeks ago. Sustained a minor scratch over the headlight and some hair in my bumper. Sadly the deer did not do as well. These are surprisingly solid cars. Maybe they don't crumple like the modern designs, but I like the firm thud that my door makes when I close it. I know they are famous for rust but my 78 is one of the more solidly built vehicles I've ever driven.
