Luggage for rack?

Post by MikeR »

I have a family weekend away coming up and am planning to use the Spider. Here is the problem - by the time I have my full 'security blanket' load of spares and tools in the boot (OK, TRUNK!) there is not much roof left for 'humans stuff'. Fortunately I have a chrome luggage rack on the trunk lid which I intend to use for the first time.

Now, I figure that that the luggage piece will need to be 'hard-bodied' so that it can be secured without squashing the contents and shower-proof (it's a weekend trip in England so rain is pretty much guaranteed at some point!). All of our existing luggage pieces are either soft-sided or 'wheely cases' with pop-up handles and an 'undercarriage'. If I have to go out and purchase a new piece specifically for the Spider I want it to look 'period authentic'.

So, the question to all you style-councillors out there is - what sort of luggage piece would look right in the back of 1982 Spider 2000 in red with a 'biscuit' soft top? (If it was a very early model Spider I would have thought a picnic style wicker hamper would be right but I think things had moved on by the late 70s / early 80s.)

Any suggestions (humorous or otherwise) welcomed. Oh, and putting the luggage in the back seat of the car and strapping the 10 year old child to the luggage rack has already been rejected!

I always carry a plastic, zip-up body bag (yes, that's right - the thing dead bodies are placed in  ) so that when I empty the car (AC Coupe) out for a competition event, I have somewhere that's weather-proof to put all those loose items of clothing and other essential stuff that the cars tend to accumulate.
Folded in half it would be ideal to wrap any hard or soft bags that you might like to strap onto the boot rack. :D

Well... to have a lot more space for stuff I first use the left and right rear fenders/wings for all the "automotive"stuff. Then I leave the spare wheel at home - this gives a lot more room - statistics say that you won't have a tire breaking down more often then every 40 years.... and I can store some dozen bottles of wine there :-) - but: I take a spraycan of tire-sealing stuff with me - check this out: http://cgi.ebay.de/ELASTOFIT-PANNENSET- ... m153.l1262

The thought of you zipping through the English countryside in your lovely car with a child strapped to the luggage rack is an image I cant seem to get out of my head!! Maybe a vintage Sampsonite suitcase in a suitable plaid color? They are large enough to put the child inside the luggage.

Pelican is awesome stuff, but very expensive.
Just hit a sporting goods store, and pick out soem decent wter proof storage bags. They make soem neat stuff, that is not that expensive. Vinyl/rubber bags that open on one end. Velcro the bag closed, roll the flap a few times, then buckle it closed. THere ar eenough color options, that you could find soem that compliment your paint.
