exhaust manifold heat shields

i have heard that exhaust manifold heat shields were not introduced until 1979. is this true? if so, has anyone with a pre-1979 car created their own? pictures / materials would be great. thanks.

Maybe you can find a used one. Weld 3 bolts to the manifold and be good to go!
