Guys,
I just had my gearbox rebuilt and its finally back in. When I adjust the clutch, do I press the pedal to only when I feel some resistance for the one inch of free play or until the clutch engages? I need to press the clutch more than halfway to the floor before it engages and I can shift gears smoothly.
Thanks!

Re: clutch adjustment question
pressing the clutch disengages it, so that you can shift, it is engaged when you release it and it clamps the friction disk to the flywheel. but as to your question, you should have approx 1 inch of freeplay in the peddle till you start to feel the throw out bearing make contact with the pressure plate . you should also have a return spring on the release lever as well, this will insure two things the clutch peddle height will match the brake peddle, and the throw out bearing will not rest ( and continuously spin) on the pressure plate release fingers

Re: clutch adjustment question
Thanks.
The reason I am asking it that I seem to have a noisy clutch. It makes kind of a whirring noise when the pedal is disengaged but goes away when the pedal is down. Since the gearbox has all new bearings and shafts and synchros and most of the gears, I doubt it is a bad bearing. Danny from Fun Imported Auto and Toys did the rebuild, I have faith that its put together right and its filled with GL-1.

Re: clutch adjustment question
Sounds like your pilot bearing. this wouldnt be replace with a tranny rebuild as the bearing is in the block.

Re: clutch adjustment question
did the pilot bearing and had the flywheel cut and polished...
After a year of the car being off the road, I just want to drive her! The thought of tearing it all apart again is too much to bear

Re: clutch adjustment question
I replaced my pilot bearing last year when I had the trans rebuilt because I thought the old pilot bearing was noisy. It was, but my new one was noisier! I left it in and so far, so good, a year later. BTW, did you put all the insulation back under the console, the plate and boot? If you haven't yet, that quiets it down quite a bit.

Re: clutch adjustment question
these trans tend to be a little noisy when in neutral at idle, often sounds like a bearing, if your oil level and quality is good , i would not worry too much

Re: clutch adjustment question
I checked the oil level last night and things look good so I'm going to put the new carpets in, clean off a year's worth of dust and greasy fingerprints and enjoy...
Thanks!
