1975 spider stalls out

Post by 124spider »

my 75 spider has been running great, last week end out for a ride and it stalled out while driving. i pull over let it sit and restart . i get to second gear and it stalls out again, after several times i figure maybe water in the line. so i put in some dry gas and it continues to stall out even in nuetral and revving the motor it will stall out. I heard points could be a problem. i had it tuned last yr any suggestions

First things first. Check the fuel filter. You are not getting gas.

The odds of a fuel filter plugging that fast are slim to none.
But you do need to check some basics. WHen car stalls does it stay dead?? How do you get it re-started??
If it stays dead for a while, check spark, use some old plug, pull plug wire, stick in old plug, lay on head, crank, should see spark.
IF it stays dead, remove air filter and pump throttle, should see fuel pissing into carb from accel pump.

carb bowl may not be filling quickly enough to replace used fuel, do to partial clog or gunk with float mechanism.

Does your car have the dual points distributor?
Possibly when the ignition is switched from the startup points to the running points, the running points or condensor are bad.

When the car dies it is losing either fuel or spark. Which is it??
When it is sitting there dead, does it spark?? Does it have fuel in the carb??
Does it stall just sitting still?? If so, as it starts to fail, piss some carb cleaner into carb. (safety glasses) does carb cleaner help??If so, it is running out of fuel.

Hi Roy the 1975 124 spider has dual point distributor . you could be on to something because in the idle position the car runs great its when it gets hot and running it stalls out . I will check out the points thanks

I had the same issue with my '78 with dual points. I switched to single points and that worked for a while and then they were regularly going out of gap. Last year I switched to Pertronix and have never had an issue since.
