Will newer engine (2000) fit in 1975 Spider?
Will newer engine (2000) fit in 1975 Spider?
New to forum and Fiat Spiders. I have recently purchased a 75 Spider (smog exempt in CA). I was thinking of replacing the 1800 for a 2000 engine. Is this an easy and straight forward engine swap? Can I keep the same 5spd transmission or will/should I swap that out as well? Any advise is appreciated.

it will bolt in perfectly. there are a few things you may have to change, such as motor mount brackets etc. also some have had distributor clearance issues with the hood, i have never had that problem and have put many 2.0's in early spiders

Somebody just asked this about a '71. Here's what I posted there:
Yes, you can install the 2 liter engine. You will have to move the alternator to the driver's side, so be sure to get the alternator bracket with the new engine, mind you finding a used one is easy.
Move the alternators wires to the left side while the engine is out. You will have to rotate the distributor so the wires point forward, and maybe a bit to the passenger side to get more hood clearance. The timing belt cover may rub the center hood bracing. I had to notch my TB cover.
We sell some motor mounts that lower the engine some, it helps with clearance.
If you can get the distributor and coil/module combo with the 2000 engine than that's an easy upgrade to electronic ignition.
