Engine hoist

Post by V12StealthHunter »

I've been looking to buy an engine hoist but all I can find at the usual places (AutoZone, Pepboys, Oreilly, HarbourFreight, NorthernTool, etc...) is the same Chinese, white label, re-branded everywhere. Which is this thing;
http://www.amazon.com/Torin-T32001-Fold ... roduct_top

The overall positive reviews are misleading. Its very poorly made. Anyone have any tips on where I can get a good one?

I need to pull a 1000lb assembly (fully dressed V12 and gearbox). My budget is $500.

Best thing you can do is buy used. Watch Craigslist for one. A friend loaned me his super giant, beefy, mega sized hoist. He paid $100 for it I think he said. Sure it is used but the quality of this hoist is outstanding. No brand name is listed on it unfortunately but it is really, really well built.

that 2 ton hoist with an 8 ton ram will be fine for your 1000 lb pull ..if you want new and shiny... while the differences in that one and a "well built" good one are apparent to the close inspecting eye ... you can kiss all your 500 bucks goodbye and most likely even more ..and you will loose the ability to fold it up .. unless you are pulling engines for a living you will end up staring at that $$$ hoist in the corner (scowl) ... I second the craigslist option for the hoist ....ask around ... maybe your friends know someone ... put the wife on the task ... just say around the dinner table "hey know anybody has an engine hoist?" ...if you were close it would be me .. and spend the money on your engine stand (overkill is always better) .. a leveler is nice to have .... weight rated chain adds up quick

I got one of those from harborfreight maybe 5-6 years ago and the quality is just fine. Ive had not issues at all and I have given it a lot of work. Maybe the quality has reduced over the years. Mine isnt branded Torin, but looks identical to that one.

Ive had a harbor freight hoist for about seven years. It works well and has been used many times. It even pulled a v8 out of a 69 firebird with no issues. It folds right up too.
