Cuts off at 190-200 degrees temperature

Post by papawolfe »

I purchased a 2000 Fiat Spider in Texas in June of 2012. After driving about 300 miles, the engine suddenly began to
just cut off. After sitting for a few minutes, it would restart, only to cut off again when I slowed down from full throttle.
Went to a shop in Houston where we replaced the fuel pump (didn't know what else to try) and began home to North Carolina. After driving to get the engine at operating temperature, it would cut off when letting off the pedal. I would coast to the side of the road, wait a few minutes, start it back up, and continue until I had to slow down or stop. I have tried to send it to an "Imports" mechanic who changed the module connected to the ignition coil, but the problem persists.
I have replaced both the water temperature sensors. When cool, vehicle starts and runs like a champ. Any suggestions ? Thanks from North Carolina.

I would have changed ignition coil module as well since this is a common issue. See if you can borrow a coil from someone to see if it is coil itself.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!

When it dies, does the tachometer drop to zero? If so, it's an ignition problem for sure.
If not, then likely a fuel injection (double relay, ECU, their connections, ground, fuel pump fuse, FI connection to ignition coil loose, etc etc) problem.

Thanks to each of you. Tach does drop to zero. Coil tests outside of resistance limits listed in Clymer. Will be trying a new coil.
