Pertronix Install questions

Post by georgeramos »

I finally bought the Ignitor and the Flame thrower coil from AR and started the install this morning. I cleaned and re-lubricated the advance plates/springs, removed the points and condensor and swapped out the bracket/coil. I have a couple of questions I hope someone can help with before i complete the install tomorrow. (had to cut it short today and went to look at a bunch of NOS parts i might buy...stay tuned)

Anyhow, the plate that came with the kit only seemed to fit on the dizzy in one position which is shown here...

First question - Does that look OK to have the ignitor module so far away from the distributor cam?

Second question - the old coil had a green/black HOT lead to the ballast resistor with a short red from the BR to the Pos coil. Do I simply cap off that green/black? or does it now need to go directly to the +coil?

I think that's it for now, I am very excited to be doing this upgrade...

As it states on the invoice the clearance between the ignitor and lobes should be ~0.030", so it looks like it's too far away.

Yes, the hot wire goes to the positive of the coil.

Remove the module and flip the mount plate over. See if that opens up more choices.

Got it installed, wired, set timing and on first run still had a miss at 3500rpm. Pulled plug #1 and it's ceramic insulator was completely gone. New plugs (and wires, why not) and its running great although I must say (and Keith will agree) my car ran quite nicely with (single) point setup. No noticeable change with the Pertronix but hopefully less fiddly in the future. I am glad to have done it. :D

No, it was just really paying attention to the instructions...

Im pretty certain the holes shown on the instruction sheet are the ones to follow.

Did you have the problem of the Tach not working after the installation? I installed the same setup from AR in my 1974 Spider. Have not gotten the tach working since. Let me know. Thanks.

I had the car out for a longer drive yesterday and it definitely runs smoother through the power range than the point system. Not sure if it feels faster, dont think so but it purrs now where it used to rattle a bit.
