Momentary transmission lock up ?

Post by grisoni »

Drove car about a mile, at stop it "clanked" and would not roll more than about 3 or 4 inches front or back, shifter seems fine and I could push it fine in neutral. could a couple gears have engaged at the same time?

Jacked rear up and it acts just fine. ??? Any body had an Issue like that.

So , I drained transfluid and rear end and found nothing indicating imminent failure, I did find a missing zerk fitting in the u joint behind driveshaft bearing, could that have jammed up?

Check your timing belt to make sure it didnt break. sounds like your crank may be hitting the aux cam.

has the car recently been worked on? what did you take apart? tooth missing from pinion gear in rear end possibly? check that.

Engine runs just fine, like I said I drained both gear oils and found nothing.

Right now I can't duplicate it. Don't really want to drive it without finding something.

Is there a possibility that first and third (or any other than second gear could be trying to engage?)

I did find remnants of a tooth ( About a quarter inch long) in the rear end oil last year after I purchased the thing, nothing tho in about three K of driving.

That's not good. When the lock up at speed, it can spin the car around.

I think its my transmission input shaft , It "ran" fine on jacks but as soon as I drove it down the driveway it made as grinding noise with a load on the system, its a 72 tranny in a 79 wonder if the input splines are different.

The transmission has detents that don't allow it to engage in two gears at the same time. (without the detents, it can engage into two gears, and you will probably have instant catastrophic failure)

The input shafts should be the same if I remember correctly. But dude, if you found gears in the rear end, you have to confront that. Saying that, I've seen a fiat rear end run fine (whined a lot) with two full teeth missing on the pinion.

Not sure about work on the tranny, came out of my parts car. I guess I'll be sending the original one out for O/H. Was hoping the replacement one would last through the summer. My Beemer sprung a radiator leak the same day, good thing I have a Japanese rig :) Maybe I'll trade the BMW and FIAT for a Miata....
