73 and 74 bumpers

Post by ScotcH »

Hey all,

Just picked up a couple of parts cars (I have a 78 now). The seller claims 1974 and 1973. I have yet to verify numbers and parts, but one thing stood out: The 73 had split rear bumpers (small, chrome), and 1 piece chrome front. the 74 has the double tube huge rear, but also the small chrome front. Both have the front turn signals in the right place (ie, on body, above bumper). Was this original like that, or was the rear updaded to the later bumper style? Just curious ....

I'll be pulling off parts from this cars over the summer, so might have some parts for sale at some point, but mainly just wanted them for parts for my (wife's) car :)

Also, any suggestions on where to get the bumpers re-chromed? They are in decent shape, but rust is getting a hold.

Don't know where you live. I live in Winston Salem nc found a rre-chromer near Charlotte nc. Told me he would charge $350 to re-chrome those thinner bumpers. Was looking at some but did not want to pay the price.

Shit, that much? Well, the fiat might end up with some nice matt black bumpers lol ... I'll look around locally first, see what I find.

I wonder if the '74 has been sectioned together from 2 cars - '74 front and '75 or later rear.
Pic of the bumpers and how they mount would help.

IIRC the California and Maryland 73/74 models had the blade style bumpers but they were segmented and fitted with large rubber pads in the positions where other states (and some Euro models) had the standard overriders.

The standard blade bumpers were one piece with the overriders over the top. The CA/MD bumpers were three separate pieces but looked pretty similar to the other style (other than the ugly rubber inserts). Front and rear both had the rubber pieces.

I'm sure someone here has a photo which can much better show what I'm trying to describe.

I am not aware of any cars being built with a twin tube rear bumper and blade style front bumper. The bumpers were changed to the heavy twin tube type for the 75 model year.

Yeah, I'm guessing the rear must have been swapped at some point. Both front bumpers are 1 piece. I'll get some pics once I unload them ... still in the trailer for a bit till I make room!

You can take almost 200 lbs off the car by getting rid of cluncky looking tubular bumpers. I went some overrides I found. Attached them to the bumper shocks and they look good. Will post pic when I get to my lap top.

something to consider is that vinyl wrap that looks like chrome......If I had to do this on the cheap that's the way I'd go.
By the way $350 is bloody cheap, you should see what they charge here in oz..

Hmmm, good idea! I have a wrap/decal guy for our race cars. I'll see what he can do. We have a bunch of race cars running with us with chrome vinyl on them, and it look pretty damn good.
