Bent valves

So my friend got his engine together and when he set the timing and got the belt on, he rotated the engine and bent the valves
So what did he do wrong , I don't know the whole story as in how this happened,

something was not right, did he change the cam gears, he may have them on the wrong cams, that is the first thing i would look for

All new stuff, I told him to call you, but I don't think he did,
I told him, that is why my car is in Florida, lol I want mine done right.

He did not turn the engine over BY HAND two revolutions to be sure nothing will touch.

He did turn it,, he heard and felt something, but it was to late

He turned it by hand, felt something, so fired her up just to make sure that it really was a problem?

If the engine is turned by hand it should be possible to determine if there is anything interfering without necessarily bending the valves. Has the head been removed to confirm that the valves are actually bent?

yes, it has been confirmed
acutally when he turned the engine over he did feel a thumping , he thought the aux shaft was being nudged a tad, im not sure what the whole story is
as i know of he did time the engine thru number 4.
set the cam wheels to there marks. set all the other stuff and then set the belt on. so i guess something was not timed correct

the head was from vicks auto, it was not done by him or anyone from our area, so im sure the head was done correct etc
he said the gasket may have been on and the head and top of pistons could have been to close. so im not sure

He bent the valves by turning it by hand?

So - as previously mentioned - has the head been taken off to confirm the valves are damaged?

Yes it is confirmed and yes they bent when he turned it by hand, the engine has not been started

Silly Question. How was the head packaged and shipped - possible shipping damage and not set up damage???? I would think you would feel the pistons hitting the valves if turned by hand, especially with the plugs out.

Any update on this, I am curious to find out what happened to the valves. With the larger valves could it have been valve to valve contact that bent them?
