Ok here's amother thing that I have been wondering about. I live on a steep hill. When I am going downhill and turning, going slow and applying brakes the steering binds up. is this a nuisance or something more??

Re: Steering binds when applying brakes
you mean you can't turn once the brakes are applied? or the car pulls to one side? It may have a sticking caliper

Re: Steering binds when applying brakes
It binds when I apply the brakes, the moment I let up on them it releases, and I can muscle my way through it for the most part, and since I am going slow it's not a big deal for now I suppose. It doesn't seem/feel like a caliper to me.

it is a big deal, for now and for later!
steering components are safety issues. brake components are safety issues. no disrespect intended, but if you don't value your safety....even i value the safety of those around you, and I don't know your neighbors.
one of these components has failed or is not assembled correctly. before you venture out to the road again, this issue needs to be resolved.

Ok where should I start then? The only time I can tell that this happens is down a steep hill at under 5 MPH.

Re: Steering binds when applying brakes
i'm curious i have the same problem , but only when i drive 120 km/h and i need to break fast the car changes lanes if not hold firmly
anyway i guess my problem is the calipers sticking combined with probably bad brake hoses and some almost used up brakepads
i'm about to fix this after my mariage (2 weeks !!!) becouse i need the car as cerimonial vehicle , she only needs to drive @ low speed for that and there is no marriage without car (my fiancee's words ) , so i leave them for the time beeïng , but after the honeymoon this will be the last thing i perform on her (the car ) this year ....hopefully
we depart on honeymoon 2days after we're maried i try to supply you guys with some pictures of her and my wife

Congratulations, Tappy! Sounds like you have a good woman if she won't marry you without your car.
As for the brakes binding, are you hearing any noise when this happens? It sounds like it only happens when your nosediving (is that even a word? ) I'd check the condition of your tie rod ends and centerlink.

Re: Steering binds when applying brakes
Congrats Tappy! Post pics after you return! It does sound to me like worn suspension,or bearings or combo of both or they would probably pull at any speed. Does one side of your brakes, (by feeling wheel after a cold start and several test stops) get hotter than the other? If so it might point you in one direction. It sounds like the brake job is in order anyways so good luck with that! I am tackling mine soon as well!

Re: Steering binds when applying brakes
Tappy,
A Spider that darts into another lane when the brakes are applied means that one of your calipers is not working well. If you think about the problem logically, you can realize that only one caliper is applying strong braking force. The other is applying none or not enough to balance the braking.
When I first got my '78 Spider I tried a rebuild of both calipers to fix this problem. All the cleaning and changing of rubber parts didn't fix it. Because I got tired of talking it apart I just sprayed some white high temp grease under the outer rubber and two years later it's still working with no ill affects from the grease.
I think that even as clean as I could make the piston and interior of the caliper there was still enough friction to make the braking uneven.
BTW, rebuilding the calipers did make it better. It was the grease that finally made it fell perfect.
Anyway, this could be an interim solution for you until you get over being married and go back to work on you car.
Much luck with the new life ahead.
