playing hooky-road trip

Post by azruss »

With a rare cool day and the wifey visiting with an out of town friend, I played hooky and took a road trip to Tortilla Flat. (picture in your mind what a place in Arizona called Tortilla Flat would look like, and you've probably got it right  ). This is the longest outing for the spider to-date....a little over 3 hours. 2 of that on the freeways doing 75 (speedo was reading 79...dont think i was going that fast). Side windows up, wings opened about 3/4"...with the rear screen, the speed was pretty civilized. Once on the road (hiway 88) it narrows to 2 lane 50 mph speed limit til the edge of the canyon. Once you start down, the paved road gets very rough as the top layer of asphalt was disintegrating fast. Speed limit drops to 25 with a string of blind 15 mph corners with a drop off on one side that would be death defying to say the least. A surprising amount of traffic that kept most of the trip below speed limit. I did manage to break free by stopping and taking pictures and then seeing how long it took to catch up. The final stretch into Tortilla Flat was downhill twisties with no one in front of me, so pushed the car hard til I got to the one way bridge. At Tortilla Flat were 7 cop bikes parked in a row. Had their riders been outside, I'm sure i would have attracted plenty of attention. Car performance was great. Lots of tire grip, even on the rough roads, rear sway bar was a dream, keeping the nose from pushing out. Hunkered down and bit in good on the tight corners. Lots off fun, nothing rattled off the car, no rocks, no close calls. I very good day. 8)

Sounds like your spider is really running fantastic and what a great road to enjoy the thrill. I would like to drive the road from Sedona to Flagstaff.

Give me a call when you decide to go. I'm up for a return visit. Maybe we can talk to Demar and make a trio.....or anyone else in the area, for that matter.

Most of Arizona around me is flat and straight. This is the closest interesting place to drive and it is an hour away by freeway. When i lived in Oregon I had a plethora of world class twisties 15 minutes from my front door. Maybe its a good thing. At my age I would probably kill myself or end up in jail.

Just a curve in the road would be great here lol . I know Oregon is like Washington state, lots of awesome roads there and even just driving with the top down and seeing the view would be great, you don't need to speed all the time

+1 on the fun driving in the Texas Hill country around Austin and San Antonio. However, some of the folks in PA and NJ have some of the best two lane roads around Washingtons Crossing with historical areas, covered bridges, huge trees with great elevation changes. Driving in the spring and fall there almost makes up for the many months of snow... almost!
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!

Sounds like fun Russ. When I first moved here in 83, I took the 60 to Globe/Miami then the 188 to Roosevelt Dam. The road from there to Tortilla Flat was ruff and narrow, but the views were great. Got burnt to a crisp, but what does a boy from Pennsylvania know about the Arizona sun?
We could also do the run from Sedona to Flag and spend the night at the cabin. Although I can see that run being filled with tourist doing 15 MPH.

Oh and the road from Globe to Show Low would satisfy your twisty needs. Used to be 666 but they renamed the route.
