AFM beyond repair?

Post by 76was124 »

Well the reason behind my myriad of performance issues with high idle, low power and sudden surging is now visible having removed the AFM and seeing the warped flap and how it gets stuck at a couple points.

I realize a little cleaning and sanding may get rid of the flap sticking problem, but is this AFM beyond repair due to the severe warp in the Flap? I understand there are rivets that can be drilled out (Is that under the electronics black cover?) but how practical is it to straighten out the flap without bending the shaft and ending up with a scrap AFM and wasting hours of labor?

Due to reflections, the light (opening) around the flap looks much bigger than it is,most of the light is a reflection of the AFM tunnel surfaces.

its not quite as simple, but if you look at the bottom, you will see aluminum posts that go thru the bottom plate, those are what hold the bottom on the afm, you can drill them. replacement will involve screws that will go into the holes you make.

next the bent door, straightening it may prove to be impossible, it may break. but i have fixed many. the biggest issue is the dragging. it cannot drag and must move freely. the warpage and subsequent air bypass can be adjusted out. using a belt sander or a file you can remove a little material where the door drags. put it back together and try.

you wont loose anything but a little time trying. if it doesnt work buy another one.

Mine was not as bad as yours and I was able to sand it down a little bit at a time until the door swung freely. This completely eliminated the stumble that the car occasionally had. I didn't disassemble it, just reached in and sanded the housing where the drag marks were until it was swinging freely. It took a few hours, working slowly with 400 grit, but it worked. But like I said, yours looks to be in worse shape and likely needs replacement.

You can see some minor drag marks on the housing in this pic.

Thanks guys, I'll be hunting for a replacement, and in the meantime will give sanding a try to keep the restoration effort moving forward.

Wow, what a huge difference a good Afm makes!!!

It eliminated all the missing, rough idle, high idle and low power issues. I am also no longer concerned I might have screwed up the valve adjustment job I did this winter.

I was fortunate to get a good deal on a used Afm for $50, so I can work on fixing the old one at my leisure so as to have a spare!
