32ADFA Parts Detail and Rebuild
32ADFA Parts Detail and Rebuild
As part of trying to get my '79 automatic to run well I am attempting my first intake/carb swap. I've been reading the repair books I have, have a Weber manual coming from evil-bay, looked at diagrams (which only frustrates me) and played with the carb itself to the point of becoming a fetish.
Perhaps just because I am so mechanically challenged and visually oriented, I just want to make sure I understand how these things work before I tear one down, attempt the rebuild and try to install it correctly. To that end, I have taken pictures and tried to match them up with the drawings. And, of course, the end result is that I have questions.
So, let's start with a tour of the 32ADFA1 carburetor with labels attached as best as I could figure things out. At the end of all this I hope someone can point out how all the hose nipples are attached to where (if that makes sense).
The view from the front of the car:
with a top view:
The view from the fender:
The view from the firewall:
And, the view from the engine itself:
So now all I want is to be sure I know which fuel lines go where, which are vacuum lines and water lines and where on the manifold, etc. they attach.

Re: 32ADFA Parts Detail and Rebuild
On the second pic what you have labeled as INLET is actually the vent, and what you labelled as VENT is actually the fuel return.

Re: 32ADFA Parts Detail and Rebuild
Thanks, Csaba. This is exactly what I'm after, correct information. Now all I have to do is figure out all the vaccuum and water connections.
I have gone back and edited the picture and then edited this thread. Should be right now. Thanks, again.

?? I don't agree w above poster. In the second pic, what you have labeled fuel return is indeed the fuel return. (arrow out)
What you have labeled "vent" in second pic is the vent.
And I don't see anything labeled "inlet" in second pic??

Ben,
I have a couple of PDF files on the 32ADFA. If you PM me with your email address I can forward them to you.

I suspect that the original poster just replaced the photo that was originally linked. I saw the original version, and it was labeled incorrectly.majicwrench wrote:?? I don't agree w above poster. In the second pic, what you have labeled fuel return is indeed the fuel return. (arrow out)

I forgot to mention that I went in and edited the pic after getting Csaba's info. My bad, sorry. The inlet is cut off in the pic because the forum display parameters.majicwrench wrote:?? The last picture is the thermovalve for the EGR system (I only know that because I posted the same question earlier this year). I pulled and plugged mine. A plug that fits an O2 sensor hole will will fit.

i tried to pull mine but the darn thing was literally impossible to get loose no matter what I tried. I cut it off flush and welded it up so nothing could ever get through it.
Re: 32ADFA Parts Detail and Rebuild
Well, I never claimed to be the brightest....
Somehow I had never found Artigue's PDF file on the ADF
http://www.artigue.com/wp-content/uploa ... er_adf.pdf
I think it answers most of my questions. But maybe my pictures will help some other dolt like me, at least until they read down to this link and download the PDF.
I'm sure I will come up with other questions, but I certainly Brad's advice here and in other threads.

Re: 32ADFA Parts Detail and Rebuild
I knew I'd have more questions.
So I pulled the carb off the 1800 set-up from one of my '78s and am about to start the 3rd can of carb cleaner. It is interesting to see how it all goes together and to try to learn what everything does.
So the solenoid is out and I know I'm supposed to apply 12V to open it, which I haven't tried yet. However, it looks like it is already open to me. I can't imagine it pushing the jets out anymore. So, does this look right, or should i be looking for a replacement?
When I seperated the throttle chamber from the body, one of the little brass tubes was loose. As best I can tell these are only for locating parts in relation to one another. I think I figured out where it goes. But, then, as I'm cleaning it and turning it over, I found a 3rd one and have no idea where it fell out of. Can someone tell me what these do, if anything, and where they go?
This is my best guess:
Should I take the choke water jacket apart and clean inside it? Also, how to do you test these?

Re: 32ADFA Parts Detail and Rebuild
I have some NOS stuff for carbs, including a couple of kits. I thought going thru them would help me learn more, but it just kinda confused me.
Here are two pics of the first bag I opened.
Seems obvious the gasket on the upper left is used.
And the rest of the package:
The needle/seat for the float looked to be a new match to the existing. And other parts seem to relate the 32ADFA as well.
Then I opened the second package, which was still factory-sealed. The page of instructions inside are specifically labeled for the Weber 32ADFA.
It has a different set of gaskets, and both of the base gaskets are thick:
and it's components in the inner bag were quite different.
The needle/seat is different. Different number of o-rings, Has small gaskets. No spring, fuel screen, etc.
Actually, the old carb seems to be in good shape, and was a working carb when the block froze up. I'm wondering if cleaning it thoroughly and replacing the gaskets would be good enough. Or should i go ahead and re-jet it, replace the pump diaphragm, etc.
And I'm guessing I'll have to find a decent choke diaphragm off another body, and possibly the solenoid.
Comments? Questions? Help?? I still have hopes of driving this car this summer.

Re: 32ADFA Parts Detail and Rebuild
There are two thick gaskets bcs one goes between the manifold and the carb and the one with the little holes goes between the two halves of the carb.

Re: 32ADFA Parts Detail and Rebuild
In the third picture in this thread, the side of the carb shows two connectors near the idle mixture screw. I'm assuming these are vacuum lines that need to connect to something? But what?
