Rear Brakes Issues

Post by ylbill »

Okay I know I've been procrastinating, but I'm still dealing with brake drag issues. Dealt with fronts last year now the rears. Jacked up the rear to see how freely the wheels would spin with my hands. Car was in neutral. Drivers side had drag and could hear that the pads were rubbing the caliper a bit and wheel didn't spin freely (about 1/2 of the way around). The passenger side didn't spin at all. I've remember something about how to support the diff? Where to start i.e. bleed, sliders, rebuild, new calipers?? Thanks

I would start with the right side. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the actuator. If the actuator can be moved, then my guess is the caliper is locked up, keeping the pads against the rotor. If the actuator can not be moved then maybe by working that loose, it would release the pads from the rotor. If you see brake fluid leaking out from the protective rubber boot, then you are in need of a re- build.

Search the threads to determine if the rebuild is in your comfort zone.

I've had two cars with clogged/collapsed center rear brake hose that showed similar symptoms. for $12, it probably needs to be replaced anyways. The master cylinder and pump fluid through the hose, but the fluid cannot retract back.

Take it out, you should be able to blow through it freely. If you cant, go ahead and install your new one. I have never seen a seized actuator, although I don't doubt it. AR sells a rear brake "master rebuild kit" that has all the nice rubber parts you'll want if you decide you need a full rear brake rebuild.
