26/34 DHSA1 on 1756 engine/manifold

Post by jetboy »

So i bought a mongrel of a car- 69 with a 1756 (PO said it was a 1600 when i bought it) engine and manifold (got the wide single intake) - the head block numbers mark it as a 74-76 coupe engine though the lower block points to a 77-78 spider.

But somehow in all that they did not bother to switch the carb, its still got a 26/34 DHSA1- from the 1438 engine. I am thinking-- this carb is not gonna cut it. What say you all? what are good and relatively inexpensive alternatives? or do I rebuild and rejet this little guy and give it a go?

i just got the car to fire today for the first time with starter fluid.. so the carb is next on the list.

cheers,

josh

You can use any carb that Fiat stuck on a 124 spider. That includes the 34 DMSA and the 32 ADF. The ADF uses a water choke which your car probably is not set up for ( a water spigot on the back of the intake manifold and one on the end of the water pipe coming off the water pump). The DMSA is a sister of the carb you have and would bolt right on, including the cable operated choke. The DMSA is the largest of the three Webers that came on a spider. You can also use a Weber 32/36 DFV. This is a generic Weber 2 barrel that is the same architecture as your carb and the DMSA. You can buy them new from most of the Fiat parts vendors or find them on eBay. Do NOT get a 32/36 DGV, it is a mirror image of the DFV and would be a super pain to install. Your carb is OK but it's a vacuum operated secondary rather than a mechanical one and it's hard to test to see if the vacuum mechanism is working correctly. It is also possible to convert that carb to mechanical secondary using parts from a junked DMSA.

Wimpy, wimpy wimpy. The DHSA1 barely had enough power for the 1438cc, especially when they installed the air cleaner from the 850 on it! Get a DFEV and you'll have a happy car.

well, i found a weber 36 DCD for $30 so I am gonna give that a go and see what happens. I figure for that price I can afford to experiment and it seems like a simple carb.

Doing a carb swap right now on a '79. I am interested to hear how this worked out for you, and if you have pictures. Thanks.

i am working on the linkage now- between other things. the carb is super simple - so I am hoping I can get it to work. mechanical secondary and all . the main issue i can see coming up is that its quite tall - which is a plus for performance as this should help the gas to be fully atomized before it hits the intakes, but it might mean a very thin foam air filter- and I hope I have enough space to get decent air flow. I think because i have the bumped hood it will be ok, a flat hood car might be a problem with this carb.

its a damn hard carb to find parts for as well, so if you get one, be prepared to search. currently i need a choke cover, which pierce manifolds was out of until june. so for now, no choke.
