Tranny bearings

Post by pertyfly »

I believe my input shaft bearing is no good. When I was driving it last year, it would make a bit of a bearing noise while in neutral - clutch out, and also somewhat while driving in all gears. Not with clutch in. This tells me input bearing...no?

If this is the case, is it replaceable without dismantling the whole tranny, or does it practically have to be taken apart? I'm wondering if it can be done from the front after removing the bellhousing or something. Aside from this it works fine, so I really don't want to touch the rest of it.

Thanks

it could be the input shaft bearing, or it could be the bearing inbetween the input and main shafts. The input shaft bearing will be turning in all gears and neutral. The small caged bearing inbetween the 2 shafts will not be turning in 4th gear, since it's 1:1.
sorry for the slow reply, I read this at lunch but forgot to respond

No no...not at all.... I just thought no one really knew or something. Do you have any idea if you're able to get at the input shaft bearing from the outside, or if the whole thing has to come apart??

I've been reading the manual and it doesn't look promising. Hopefully someone here knows the trick. :(

I wouldn't touch a tranny with a ten-foot pole. Or, as Canadians say "I wouldn't touch a tranny with a 3.048-meter pole, ay"

*strange look* Why not?!? They're very easy and simple. I've done rebuilds before - not an issue. The only thing is, I don't want to do a rebuild on it!! :)

See, on some trannies there is a cover plate on the front which gets unbolted which serves as holding the front bearing in place, and removing it sometimes removes the bearing. I haven't taken the bellhousing off yet to check, so I am unsure about this one. When reading through the tranny rebuild articles, that bearing is after you've cracked it open if rebuilding, but I'm just wondering if that's the suggested order for rebuilding... LoL I guess I'm basically just holding my breath for no reason! Oh well...I might just leave it...I really don't want to crack it open right now.

when you remove the bellhousing the input bearing is exposed, no other covers hold it in. You will need a gasket between the main case and bellhousing. But why not just fill it with fluid and drive it if you don't want to do a rebuild now?

or this tranny's bearings?:

I think they both have noisy input shafts

Because it's noisy. Now, I must admit it's not crazy noisy. I just really don't want to have people (in the car) say "what's that?" LoL It's really not THAT bad, though I suppose...just...I wanted it to be better since this is the first car I'm really putting money into to keep.

Maybe I'll make sure the exhaust is nice and loud so it drowns that out. LMAO

So, since it's exposed, can it be pulled out this way easily, or is it difficult to pull out without the input shaft removed? Is it pressed in perhaps? *cringes*
