Is the brake booster a rebuildable item?

kits are available somewhere I saw once .... getting the booster apart will make you go on a shooting spree .... I have read before that some have done a boosterless conversion and stated that the pedal pressure was not actually that much more ... (not sure I believe that) but it uses old booster parts that you already have and since you don't need the actual booster you can cut it apart to get what you need .... getting a used booster by posting the wanted section may be the best option .. or pony up the cash for a new one ....

thanks for the ideas. I probably will replace the booster.

Vick has a booster for $100 (used to be priced at $125) and IAP is $255 and Bruce is $225. Anyone have experience with the different parts and the price difference? I don't want to get up under the dash anymore than I have to but I don't mind putting a $100 into something else! psg

ok Jay ... I would trust your opinion on pedal feel without the booster .... what did you think ? .. I have read that it is not that bad ..but that was from someone I believe that was justifying the fix .... and you went back to a booster when you got a hold of one .... how much of a difference ????????? inquiring minds would like to know

 you flatter me

I found it to be fine, zero issues. As mentioned above I only picked one up, yet to replace  I'll keep you posted when I post my step by step pics of how to replace the booster (maybe in the fall)

thanks, I may do the same just to keep it on the road. It can't be much worse than my '37 ford that had mechanical brakes but then I was a kid who didn't appreciate that death was a real possibility! psg

I want to check my diagnostic conclusions on this car.

Car runs and idles well. Upon applying brake pressure hissing noise from under the dash, as I apply more brake pedal hissing sound increases, idle increases, at full brake pressure car runs rough, idle goes to over 2500rpm and wants to stall (very limited braking). To me this is not a hose issue or a valve issue but a diaphragm or internal problem with the boost chamber. Any other thoughts? psg
