Ok, I got the new belt. I had everything lined up, cams to the pointers, aux at 34deg. and the crank pulley mark at TDC . I installed the belt no problems so far . I then rotated the engine using the crank pulley 2 full turns so that the cam pulleys line up at their marks. Now the problem the crank pully shaft mark no longer lines up a TDC it is about 10deg. past . The belt did not slip at any point. I removed the belt and repeated the procedure and the same result occurs. I then remove the plug from #1 and put a screw driver in it and rotate the engine just a little back and forth and as far as my eye can tell the engine is TDC, but the crank pulley is still 10deg. past the TDC on the cover mark. I am afraid to start it in this condition, for I have no clue other than the Haynes manual of what is going on. Any help or suggestions would be great, I know I keep bugging you guys but I live in BFE (rural Kansas) and the few mechanics I talked to won't tough it with a ten foot pole.
Thanks Pesto

It sounds like the slack in the belt is not being taken up as you put on the belt. Generally, it is a good idea to start putting the belt onto the teeth at the bottom, at the crankshaft pulley, and proceed up and around COUNTERCLOCKWISE, first to aux, then exhaust cam, then intake cam, and then back down to the tensioner. If there is no slippage while doing this, this will do the trick.

Set the crank pulley about 10-15 BTDC. Install the belt around the crank and aux pulley. Now rotate the crank to TDC, this should take out the slack so you can fit the belt around the cam wheels. Small spring clamps to hold the belt from slipping can give you the 3rd and 4th hands you need.

Here's a link to an image of the "helper". See "install belt" section...

Thanks for the quick repsonses. I removed the belt and made sure the engine was at TDC by putting the screwdriver in #1 got it spot on, then put the car in gear to hold it there. Then I had my son hold the belt firm against the crank pulley as I threaded it around the aux and cam pullies. It all worked out. The cam wheels are lined up and the crank is still at TDC .
I won't know if it is all good until I can get him started. My electrical issues from the PO abound with stupidity (outlined in my other post in electrical issues). I took out the wires that were directly connected to my fuse box and now I have no ignition LOL.
See you later guys, again thanks alot, without you this would be a disaster.

after the belt is installed, rotate the motor by hand a few revolutions and recheck the cam locations at TDC

Re: Timming belt replace problem 2.0
Success Well sort of. I redid everthing yet this time using #4 for TDC, it turns out to be the same. Put everything back together and it ran rough again and wouldn't hold an idle. I then, just for giggles, I rotated the distributor about 5deg. clockwise and he started right up and held the idle, still a little rough, I then used my ear to rotate the distributor a little more until the idle smoothed out. I probably moved the distributor about 10deg. I drove him until he got hot and to my suprise the electric fan worked . I adjusted the idle screw on the carb to get it around 900rpm. This should get me to a mechanic to have them fine tune the carb and set the idle by using a timming light. It still has a little backfire after getting hot.
Now I just have to get the tail ights and signals to work .
Thanks all, Pesto
